For the next round of storms

September 4, 2008 – 4:56 pm
As Gustav fizzles and Hanna, Ike, and Josephine gear up we need to continue to prepare for the worst.  I have been in contact with the Southern Baptist Convention (GA Baptist Disaster Relief) and they may have a need for operators starting the middle of next week.  These operators need to be General or above.  In addition any of the current storms could find there way to GA or to our Brothers and Sisters in nearby states.  For those that are interested in volunteering, monitor the GA ARES website www.gaares.org for information about upcoming events and storm issues as related to Amateur Radio.  As a reminder please do not self deploy.  Your service is needed but it may not be where you think it is or you may get stuck at a road block.  As requests come in through GEMA or the ARRL I will post them on the website ...

Suspending Operations for the Red Cross Shelter Support Net

September 2, 2008 – 10:29 am
Tues. 09/02/2008.  We will be suspending operations of the Red Cross Shelter Support Net at 1200 hrs (noon) today.  Speaking with Bill Parks the Red Cross Communications Representative he stated that the Red Cross was greatly appreciated for the service we provided.  There were several instances where timely traffic was passed and the routine traffic helped keep other communications links open.  I would to thanks all those who came out and participated and I appreciate the personal sacrifice made to help those in need.  I would like to specially thank the EC's and DEC's for their teamwork and coordinating efforts to make this happen.  I would also like to thank the repeater owners, control operators, and the ARES Skywarn Team for maintaining the linked repeater system which we used to maintain communications between between Red Cross HQ, the Shelters, and Information Stations.  All EC's and DEC's please forward your after ...

Monday Evening Update

September 1, 2008 – 8:05 pm
First I would like to thank all those that have participated in support of the Red Cross Shelter Support Net.  Many individauls were on when I turned on my radio at 0730 hrs and I continued to hear them throughout the day.  I appreciate the service all have given to keep this net alive.  At this time we have shelters in Carroll, Gwinnett, and Troup counties with a total evacuee population of over 500.  We also have Red Cross information Centers located at the inbound Welcome Centers located on Interstates 20, 85, and 185.  Some of these locations will be manned throughout the night and some will shut down for the evening.  Net Control is operating out the Red Cross HQ building on Monroe Drive in Atlanta and is manned 24 hrs a day.  Net support is accomplished through the ARES Skywarn Team operating out of Peachtree City utilizing the ...

Monday Morning

September 1, 2008 – 10:18 am
It appears to have been a quiet evening.  Currently Villa Rica, and LaGrange shelters are still opened and manned by Ham Radio Operators.  In addition the welcome center on eastbound I-20 is manned.  The linked repeater system is still in operation.  I would like to take this time to greatfully thank our repeater control operators for allowing us to remain linked for an extended time in support of the Red Cross for Hurricane Gustav relief.  I spoke to Bob Butler W4RBB (our Red Cross DEC) this morning and after a weekend of moving into a new house is making his way down to the Red Cross HQ to liaize for us.  I also spoke to Bill Parks Ki4EGQ our direct contact for the Red Cross said that there is rumor that a shelter in Gwinnett MAY open today  (update: there will be a shelter opened up noon today in Lawerenceville).   As I ...

Sunday Night Recap

August 31, 2008 – 10:23 pm
We currently manned the Red Cross HQ with a net control and two shelters in Carroll and Troup Counties.  The Carroll County shelter is already filled and they are sending evacuees to Troup.  I imagine we will see more shelters opening tomorrow as more folks show up from the Gulf Area.  This means we will need more amateur radio operators to volunteer and provide communications at the shelters.  At this time the Red Cross has not released which shelters will be opening next.  When they do the EC or his representative of that county will be responsible for the manning of that shelter.  Fulton County has the responsibility for manning the Red Cross HQ.  It is recommended that all EC's from all counties poll your members to see if they would like to volunteer.  If your county does not have a shelter or other requirement please contact EC's in counties ...

Status update

August 31, 2008 – 4:31 pm
Currently we have the linked repeater system up to cover the Red Cross Shelters in Troup, Carroll, and Haralson counties as well as the Atlanta Red Cross HQ.  We will need hams to man these shelters as well as others as may be opened.  Anyone interested in volunteering for these duties please contact your county DEC/EC or send an email to gaares@gmail.com.  At this time we do not have coverage in Haralson County and need someone to work the Welcome Center there on the eastbound side of I-20.
